As we celebrate 20 years, we’re sharing 20 stories of families our Angel Team has walked alongside.
This is Sara’s story.
At 36, Sara was one year from finishing nursing school, raising her 15-year-old daughter Jade alone, and working part-time at Publix. She could see the finish line.
Then a mysterious issue with her vision turned out to be a cancerous tumor on her optic nerve. The only option was a serious biopsy, drilling through her skull, with days in the ICU and months of recovery. She risked losing sight in one or both eyes.
Sara was determined not to let cancer take the future she’d worked so hard for. She planned surgery around her school semester, hoping to recover in time for January classes.
Then her car engine failed. Renting a vehicle cost $200/week. Her hours at Publix were cut, threatening her health insurance. She was already $700 short a month, before groceries.
Cancer. Possible blindness. Major surgery. Reduced income. No family support. And a daughter to raise.
This is where the Angel Team stepped in.
Our mission isn’t just paying a bill. It’s surrounding a family in crisis and saying, “You don’t have to walk through this alone.” For Sara, that meant help with rent, utilities, groceries, gas, transportation to appointments, home repairs, and blackout curtains for her recovery.
Sara spent years working toward a career caring for others. This was our chance to care for her.
Sometimes hope looks like a paid electric bill. Sometimes it’s groceries in the fridge, or a ride to the doctor. And sometimes it’s simply reminding a frightened mom that she and her daughter aren’t walking this alone.
